Quarterback Will Rogers is leaving Mississippi State after four seasons, he announced on social media Friday. Here’s what you need to know:
- Rogers is likely to enter the transfer portal as a grad transfer, though his statement keeps open the possibility of going to the NFL. The transfer window opens Dec. 4.
- The 22-year-old ranks second in SEC history in career passing yards (12,315) behind Aaron Murray. Rogers also is fourth in the conference in career passing touchdowns (94).
- Mississippi State ended its 2023 season with a 5-7 record. Rogers finished 2023 with 1,626 passing yards and 12 touchdowns to four interceptions.
What Rogers said
“To the Bulldog family: As all of you know, I love the state of Mississippi,” Rogers said in a statement. “It’s been my honor to play for our state at Mississippi State University.

“I am thankful to have had the privilege of playing for Coach Leach, a legend and a friend, and for all of the other coaches who believed in me and gave their all to this program.”

What is Rogers’ future?
If Rogers enters the transfer portal, as is expected, he’ll be one of the most sought-after players in the portal. A veteran, experienced quarterback with more than 12,000 career passing yards does not come around often. There will be a lot of interested suitors, especially teams who feel they just need a quarterback to take the next step or a one-year transition to get to a highly touted freshman.
Rogers played very well in Mike Leach’s offense but took a step back this year under new direction. It will be interesting to see if he lands in a place that runs more Air Raid or something else. — Chris Vannini, senior college football writer
