Ah, billionaires, they're just like us. Living, paying the bills, building luxury bunkers for the zombie apocalypse or whatever may bring about our eventual doomsday. No, really. We are not kidding. It seems certain billionaires took the scenario in the 2009 film 2012 seriously. The movie depicted the human race surviving by way of three arks. Occupying the arks were the one percent of the one percent – billionaires, kings, queens, presidents, and prime ministers – those who could afford the $1 billion per person price of admission (or salvation).
Now, in a case of life imitating art, a company called Vivos is building what they call "the ultimate all-risk protection and life assurance solution for high net worth families." The California based company has acquired an old Soviet era Cold War base in Germany and converted it into a luxury doomsday bunker called the Europa One. It is a 76-acre facility underneath a limestone mountain, which, according to Vivos, is capable of withstanding a close range nuclear blast, massive shock waves, a direct airplane crash, biological and chemical agents, earthquakes, electro-magnetic pulses, and any and all armed attacks.
Only 34 families will be invited to purchase space in the bunker. The property is fully equipped with power, HVAC systems, plumbing and sewage, security systems and even the Internet–which seems useless if the world is ending, right? I mean is AT&T's Wi-Fi going to survive a nuclear war? The compound also has swimming pools, movie theaters, restaurants, and fitness centers.
In the event of a civilization-altering event, Vivos will send helicopters to transport the 34 families chosen to inhabit the bunker. Those families will then inhabit 2,500 square feet of luxury living space which they can customize to their specifications. The families will also have the option to double that space so that you can bring your best friends and set up an underground putting green.
Suffice it to say, none of us should be holding our breath waiting for our invitation.
