Live.Me, a live broadcasting platform, has launched a campaign to combat cyberbullying called #SquashTheHate. The campaign is meant to encourage people to rise above online negativity by literally squashing hate.
Live.Me announced the campaign with a short video that showed a hateful comment being written on a squash, which then got smashed.
To participate in the #SquashTheHate challenge, people are encouraged to produce their own take on the theme and share it on social media with the hashtag #SquashTheHate. They are also challenged to nominate 3 of their friends to do the same. The gesture is meant as a visual symbol to spread awareness about cyberbullying, as well as encourage people to rise above the hate.
Live.Me is also encouraging participants to donate to organizations such as The Trevor Project or Pacer’s National Bullying Prevention Center. The platform pledged to donate $1 for each share a video gets for the first 10,000 shares originating inside the app, split between the two organizations.
“#SquashTheHate is meant to empower our users, and encourage them to take a stand against cyber-bullying,” said Khudor Annous, Head of Marketing and Partnerships for Live.me, in a press release. “As our community has continued to grow, the safety and comfort of our users remains our top priority, and we want to make sure we’re reiterating that in creative ways.”
Many Live.Me users and fans have already shared their own pictures and videos where they #SquashTheHate.
