Erland Josephson was a Swedish actor and author. He often worked with directors Ingmar Bergman, Andrei Tarkovsky, and Theodoros Angelopoulos. His roles include Hour of the Wolf, Cries and Whispers, Scenes from a Marriage, and Fanny and Alexander, among many productions.

Erland was born on the island Kungsholmen, in Stockholm, to a cultured family, the son of Maud Ellen Gabrielle (Boheman) and Gunnar August Josephson. His father ran a prominent bookstore in Stockholm, and was president of the Swedish Mosaic Community. His uncle (mother’s brother) was diplomat and politician Erik Boheman. His maternal great-grandfather was entomologist Carl Henrik Boheman.

Erland’s paternal grandparents, and maternal grandmother, were Ashkenazi Jewish. His maternal grandfather’s ancestry was Swedish (Lutheran), with some German. Erland’s Jewish family was very well-established in Sweden; his Jewish grandparents all had roots in Stockholm going back to the mid 1700s on some lines. His Jewish forebears were mostly from Germany and Denmark, along with Ukraine, Austria, and Poland.

Erland was married to Ulla Åberg, until his death. He had two children with his former partner Annika Tretow; one child with his former partner, actress Barbro Larsson; and two children with his former wife, actress Kristina Adolphson.

Erland’s paternal grandfather was Victor Mauritz Josephson (the son of August Abraham Josephson and Augusta Hortensia Jacobsson). Victor was born in Stockholm, to a Jewish family. Erland’s great-grandfather August was the son of Salomon Josephson, who was born in Stockholm, to German-born parents, his father from Prenzlau, Brandenburg, and his mother from Schwerin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern; and of Beata Levin, who was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. Erland’s great-grandmother Augusta was the daughter of Mauriz Jacobsson, whose father was from Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg, Germany; and of Carolina Weslig, who was born in Wesel, Düsseldorf, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, to a mother from Copenhagen, Merla/Mariana von Halle, who herself had roots in Celle, Lower Saxony, Germany. Victor had more distant ancestors from Poland, Ukraine, and Austria.

Erland’s paternal grandmother was Ann-Sofi Valentin (the daughter of Albert Valentin and Sophia Lamm). Ann-Sofi was born in Stockholm, to a Jewish family. Erland’s great-grandfather Albert was the son of Simon Albert Valentin and Beata Assur. Erland’s great-grandmother Sophia was the daughter of Jacob Lamm, whose father was born in Copenhagen, Denmark; and of Bernhardina Hirsch, whose parents were German-born, from Mecklenburg and Hamburg, respectively.

Erland’s maternal grandfather was Carl Rudolf Helmer/Helmar Boheman (the son of Carl Henrik Boheman and Petronella Amalia Åberg). Erland’s grandfather Carl was of Swedish, and some German, descent. Erland’s great-grandfather Carl was the son of Johan Henrik Boheman and Anna Brita Munthe. Petronella was the daughter of Per Georg Åberg and Ulrika Sofia Palmblad.

Erland’s maternal grandmother was Ellen Gustava Abramson (the daughter of Gabriel Abrahamson and Evelina Gumpert). Ellen was born in Stockholm, to a Jewish family. Erland’s great-grandfather Gabriel was born in Karlskrona, Blekinge, Sweden, the son of Aron Abrahamson, who was born in Berlin, Brandenburg, Prussia, to a family from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern; and of Fredrika Schlesinger, who was born in Marstrand, Västra Götaland County, Sweden, with roots in Schlesien, Neisse, Poland. Erland’s great-grandmother Evelina was born in Göteborg, Västergötland, the daughter of Nathan Jacob Gumpert, who was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, and of Edla Nissen.
